How to find the right Apple Watch strap – whatever the series or size

Since the launch of the first Apple Watch in 2015, Apple has significantly expanded its range – from Series 1–3 and the generations in between to today’s Series 11, SE and Ultra 3. With each new generation, the watch cases have grown in size, and today they range from 38 mm on the oldest models to 49 mm on the Ultra series. A strap that fits an older Apple Watch perfectly will therefore not necessarily fit a newer model or an Ultra – even if they may look similar from a distance.

Know your model before choosing a strap

If you’re unsure which generation and size your watch is, the easiest way is to start with your series. Quickly find the Apple Watch Series 11, Apple Watch Series 10, Apple Watch Ultra series or Apple Watch SE – or use the model selector at the top of the page. This way, you’ll avoid ordering a strap that’s a few millimetres too narrow or too wide for your watch case.

When your heart rate rises and you need to track your sleep: silicone and nylon straps for active wrists

If you use your Apple Watch to measure your heart rate whilst running, track your sleep at night or keep track of your training at the swimming pool, the material of the strap is just as important as the watch itself. Silicone and nylon are both lightweight, breathable materials that don’t absorb sweat and dry quickly after both rain and a shower. Because they fit snugly without being too tight, they also help ensure more stable readings from the watch’s sensors – something that’s particularly noticeable when the watch is worn all night during sleep tracking.

If you choose silicone, you’ll get a strap that can easily be rinsed clean under the tap and that withstands daily use – whether it’s for strength training, running or a dip in the pool. Nylon, on the other hand, is an obvious choice if you prefer a softer, more fabric-like feel against the skin, whilst the strap remains sweat-resistant and durable.

Office days and constant notifications: leather straps for the professional workday

If you use your Apple Watch for more than just exercise – to answer calls, check your calendar between meetings or simply keep track of time at your desk – comfort throughout a full working day is just as important as style. A leather strap gives a understated, professional look that works just as well for a lunch with clients as for a normal day at the office, and contrary to popular belief, high-quality leather actually only gets more beautiful with use.

As the watch is often worn for most of the day in a professional setting, it’s worth choosing a leather strap with a soft inner lining that won’t chafe against your wrist after several hours. Think of it as an investment in comfort at least as much as in style.

From everyday wear to smarter occasions: stainless steel straps

If you want your Apple Watch to take you from a busy day at the office to an evening dinner without needing to change it, a stainless steel strap is often the most versatile choice. Metal feels heavier and more substantial on the wrist than silicone or nylon, which for many conveys a sense of quality – whether you’re going for a simple link design or a more refined, braided variant.

Stainless steel is also the most durable material in our range. It withstands knocks and scratches better than most other strap types, and with the right finish, it retains its colour and shine for many years.

Material choice and skin comfort – how to avoid a strap that causes irritation

Because an Apple Watch is typically worn for many hours at a time – for some, even round the clock – skin-friendliness isn’t just a bonus for a strap, but a core feature. If you have sensitive skin or tend to sweat easily under the strap, silicone and nylon are generally the most breathable options, as both allow air to circulate and reduce the risk of irritation during prolonged use. Leather is less breathable than silicone, but is often perceived as comfortable against the skin, provided it is kept dry and clean. Stainless steel is hypoallergenic in most varieties and a safe choice if you’ve previously experienced irritation from other types of straps.

Whichever material you choose, we recommend that you occasionally give your skin a break from the watch – especially after exercise – and follow the cleaning advice in the FAQ below.

Protection and charging for your Apple Watch

As well as the strap itself, a case can provide extra protection against knocks and scratches, whilst a screen protector safeguards the watch’s screen from everyday wear and tear – without compromising the touch functions. If you need an extra charger for your home, office or travel bag, it ensures your watch is always ready when you need it.

FAQ

What strap width fits my Apple Watch?

The strap width depends on the size of the watch case, not the series alone. The oldest models (Series 1–3) use 38 mm and 42 mm, Series 4–6 use 40 mm and 44 mm, whilst Series 7–9 and most SE models use 41 mm and 45 mm. Series 10 and 11 use 42 mm and 46 mm, whilst the Ultra series uses the widest fit of 49 mm. If you’re unsure, you can find your model using the series overview at the top of the page – we’ll then automatically show you the straps that fit.

Is it difficult to change the strap on an Apple Watch?

No – it can be done in under a minute without any tools. Hold down the release button on the back of the watch whilst sliding the strap sideways out of the case, and repeat on the other side. Fit the new strap by sliding it into the groove until you hear or feel a distinct click. Make sure both sides are fully secured before putting the watch on.

How do I clean sweat and dirt off my strap?

It depends on the material. Silicone and nylon straps can be rinsed under lukewarm water and, if necessary, gently rubbed with mild soap – let them air-dry completely before putting them back on. Leather straps should never be rinsed under the tap; instead, wipe away sweat and dirt with a slightly damp cloth, and allow the strap to dry naturally away from direct heat. Stainless steel straps are best wiped with a soft, dry cloth and can be lightly polished if necessary.

Can I swim or go for a run in the rain whilst wearing my straps?

Most Apple Watch models are water-resistant to a certain extent, but the strap’s suitability for water depends on the material. Silicone and nylon are both suitable for swimming and wet weather, as they do not absorb moisture and dry quickly. Leather, on the other hand, should not be exposed to prolonged contact with water – switch to a silicone or nylon strap before going into the water.

Do the straps on this page fit both standard Apple Watch series and the Ultra?

Yes – we stock straps for all Apple Watch generations, from Series 1–3 to the latest Series 11 models, as well as the entire Ultra range. As the Ultra uses a wider 49 mm connection, we only show the straps that actually fit when you select ‘Ultra’ in the model selector, so you avoid ordering the wrong size.
