Galaxy Watch 8 and Dynamic Lug: why your old straps don’t fit
Have you just upgraded to a Galaxy Watch 8, Watch 8 Classic or Watch 9 and tried to clip on a strap you used with your old watch? It won’t work, and your watch isn’t broken. Samsung has actually replaced the entire attachment system – for the first time in over a decade – and this is the most common reason why customers are returning the wrong straps for the Galaxy Watch 8.
What actually happened?
Since the summer of 2025, the Galaxy Watch 8 and Watch 8 Classic have been using a new, proprietary fastening system that Samsung calls Dynamic Lug. This replaces the standardised 20mm Quick Release pin that Samsung has used since the very first Galaxy Watch, and which is still used on the Watch 7, Watch 6, Watch 5 and Watch 4. Instead of pulling out a spring pin, you slide the new strap directly onto the watch and press it until it clicks into place – much like on an Apple Watch or Pixel Watch.
Samsung cites two reasons for the change: a flatter, more ergonomic angle against the wrist, and heart rate monitoring which, according to Samsung, is 11% more accurate than on the Watch 7 series, thanks to the sensor sitting more flush against the skin. It should also be quicker to change the strap without tools.

Same name, different width: the hidden trap
Samsung calls both systems “Dynamic Lug”, but they are not the same width. The Watch 8, Watch 8 Classic and Watch 9 share a standard width. The Galaxy Watch Ultra (both the 2024 and 2025 models) uses a wider, sturdier variant designed to support the heavier titanium construction. A Watch 8 strap won’t fasten properly on an Ultra, and an Ultra strap won’t fit a Watch 8 – even though both are sold under the same name. Always check which model the strap is actually designed for, not just whether it says ‘Dynamic Lug’ in the description.
Do you have an older Galaxy Watch?
If you’re still using a Watch 7, Watch 6, Watch 5 or Watch 4, nothing will change – they all use the same 20 mm attachment as before, standard or One-Click, and your existing straps will work just as they did before.
It’s only when you upgrade to a Watch 8 or Watch 9 that you’ll need to expect to buy at least one new strap, as none of your current collection will be compatible.
Adapters are available, but we don’t recommend them for everyday use
Third-party adapters are available that allow older 20 mm straps to fit onto a Dynamic Lug watch. However, we think it’s worth thinking carefully before going down that route: an adapter adds bulk, can make the strap sit more loosely on your wrist, and risks affecting the very sensor contact that Samsung cites as the reason for the change. If you’re using the watch for heart rate monitoring in everyday life or during exercise, a strap designed specifically for Dynamic Lug is the safer choice.
How to choose the right strap
- Confirm your exact model – Watch 8 (40mm or 44mm), Watch 8 Classic (46mm), Watch 9 (40mm or 44mm), or Galaxy Watch Ultra (2024/2025).
- If you have a Watch 8, Watch 8 Classic or Watch 9: all three share the same lugs, so you can choose freely from our range of Samsung Galaxy Watch 8 straps regardless of which of the three you own.
- If you have a Galaxy Watch Ultra: make sure the strap is specifically labelled for Galaxy Watch Ultra (2025) or Galaxy Watch Ultra (2024) – not for the Watch 8.

Frequently asked questions
Will my old Galaxy Watch straps fit a Watch 8?
No. The Watch 8 and Watch 8 Classic use Dynamic Lug, a completely different attachment system to the 20mm pin used on the Watch 4, 5, 6 and 7.
Do Watch 8 straps fit the Watch 9?
Yes. The Watch 9 (40mm and 44mm) was launched in August 2026 with the same Dynamic Lug width as the Watch 8, and Samsung has confirmed that the straps are interchangeable between the two generations.
Is there a Watch 9 Classic?
No, not in this generation. Samsung decided not to offer a Classic model for the Watch 9 and only sold the 40mm and 44mm versions at launch.
Do Watch 8 straps fit the Galaxy Watch Ultra?
No. Although both are called Dynamic Lug, the Ultra version is wider and designed for the heavier watch. The two are not interchangeable in either direction.
Can I use my old 20mm straps with an adapter?
Technically, it’s possible, but we don’t recommend it for everyday use. An adapter adds bulk and can compromise the snug fit against the skin that the Dynamic Lug is designed for.
